PRP vs GFC vs Mesotherapy for Hair Fall: What Is the Difference?

Understanding newer injectable treatments for hair thinning and hair loss

Hair fall is common in both men and women. While some daily shedding is normal, persistent loss, widening of the parting, a receding hairline or progressive thinning may indicate an underlying disorder.

The first step is identifying the cause. Pattern hair loss, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disease, stress, hormonal problems and scalp conditions can all contribute. Treatment should therefore begin with clinical assessment.

Alongside conventional treatments, injectable therapies such as PRP, GFC and mesotherapy are increasingly used in hair-restoration programmes. But they are not the same.

At Paartha Diagnostic, Dental and Child Development Centre, E-21 Vijay Nagar, Delhi 110009, we are introducing PRP, GFC and mesotherapy hair treatments from 15 October 2026, following medical assessment and individualized planning.

PRP, GFC and Mesotherapy: The basic difference

Although all three involve scalp injections, their contents and concepts differ.

Treatment What is injected? Main concept

PRP Concentrated platelets from the patient's own blood Uses platelet-derived growth factors

GFC A concentrated preparation of growth factors derived from the patient's own blood Delivers growth-factor-rich components

Mesotherapy Small quantities of selected medications, nutrients or other therapeutic agents Delivers selected substances directly into the scalp

Preparation methods and compositions vary between protocols, so these terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

---

1. PRP – Platelet-Rich Plasma

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma.

A small amount of the patient's blood is collected and processed to separate a platelet-rich fraction, which is then injected into areas of scalp thinning. Platelets contain biologically active substances and growth factors that may support the follicle environment.

How PRP may help

PRP may:

Support hair-follicle activity

Improve the environment around follicles

Potentially increase hair-shaft thickness

Support growth in some patients with pattern hair loss

Studies have reported improvements in hair density and count in some patients with androgenetic alopecia, although evidence quality varies and protocols are not standardized.

PRP usually requires a series of sessions. The number and interval depend on the diagnosis, severity and response. Because it uses the patient's own blood, PRP is an autologous treatment.

---

2. GFC – Growth Factor Concentrate

GFC stands for Growth Factor Concentrate.

GFC is a newer autologous approach in which blood is processed to obtain a preparation enriched in growth-factor components, which is then administered into the scalp.

Its biological concept is related to PRP, but the processing method and final preparation differ:

PRP → platelet-rich preparation

GFC → growth-factor-focused preparation

GFC is increasingly used in hair-restoration clinics, but evidence remains developing. Studies use different preparations and protocols, making direct comparisons difficult. GFC should not automatically be described as a universally “better” version of PRP; the choice depends on the patient and protocol.

---

3. Mesotherapy for Hair Loss

Mesotherapy differs from PRP and GFC. It involves multiple superficial injections of selected therapeutic substances rather than a platelet-rich or growth-factor preparation from the patient's blood.

Depending on the protocol, these may include medications, vitamins, nutrients or other bioactive compounds. Thus, mesotherapy does not refer to one standardized formulation.

Research has evaluated agents such as minoxidil, dutasteride, growth factors and multivitamin preparations. However, reviews highlight the lack of standardized protocols and the need for larger, better-controlled studies.

Mesotherapy aims to deliver substances directly into the scalp, but expected benefits and adverse effects vary according to the formulation and technique.

PRP vs GFC vs Mesotherapy – At a Glance

PRP

Source: Patient's own blood

Main component: Platelet-rich plasma

Concept: Uses platelet-associated growth factors

Evidence: More clinical research than many newer growth-factor approaches

Common use: Pattern hair loss and hair thinning

GFC

Source: Patient's own blood

Main component: Growth-factor-rich preparation

Concept: Concentrated delivery of growth-factor components

Evidence: Promising but newer and less standardized

Common use: Hair thinning and pattern hair loss

Mesotherapy

Source: Depends on the formulation

Main component: Selected medications, nutrients or bioactive substances

Concept: Intradermal delivery into the scalp

Evidence: Potential benefit, but substances and protocols vary considerably

Common use: Selected cases of hair thinning and pattern hair loss

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

There is no single injectable treatment that is best for every patient.

The choice depends on:

Type, duration and severity of hair loss

Age and sex

Scalp examination and thinning pattern

Dandruff or scalp inflammation

Nutritional or hormonal factors

Previous treatments

Medical history

For example, androgenetic alopecia requires a different approach from sudden diffuse shedding after illness, severe stress or nutritional deficiency. In some patients, correcting the underlying cause is more important than starting injectable treatment.

---

Are These Treatments a Cure for Baldness?

PRP, GFC and mesotherapy are not guaranteed cures or replacements for appropriate medical treatment.

They may support growth and improve density or thickness in selected patients, but results vary. Permanently destroyed or scarred follicles cannot simply be restored through injections. Advanced hair loss may require medical therapy, hair transplantation or other options.

---

Do PRP, GFC and Mesotherapy Have Side Effects?

Temporary effects from scalp injections may include:

Mild pain or tenderness

Redness or swelling

Small areas of bruising

Temporary scalp discomfort

Mesotherapy may also cause reactions related to the injected substance. Reported effects include pain, erythema, headache, swelling and, less commonly, inflammatory or other local reactions.

Proper patient selection, sterile technique and administration by appropriately trained medical professionals are important.

---

Why Diagnosis Matters Before Treatment

Hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Assessment should consider:

Male or female pattern hair loss

Telogen effluvium

Alopecia areata

Nutritional deficiency

Thyroid or other hormonal problems

Scalp infection or inflammation

Other causes

Investigations may be advised depending on the clinical situation. A treatment useful for one type of hair loss may not suit another.

PRP, GFC or Mesotherapy – What Should You Choose?

Do not choose solely on advertisements or trends. Discuss the options with a qualified medical professional after assessing the cause and pattern of hair loss.

At Paartha Diagnostic Centre, we first evaluate the hair-loss problem and then discuss suitable options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

There is no universal number. The schedule depends on the type and severity of hair loss, treatment selected and response over time.

Can these treatments regrow completely bald areas?

They are mainly intended for selected patients with thinning or active follicles. They cannot guarantee regrowth where follicles have been permanently lost.

Can they be combined with medicines?

In appropriate patients, injections may form part of a broader treatment plan. This should be decided after medical assessment.

When will I see results?

Hair growth is slow. Improvement generally requires patience, follow-up and more than one session rather than an immediate change.

Is one treatment better than the others?

There is insufficient evidence to declare one universally superior. PRP has more published evidence; GFC is newer, while mesotherapy includes multiple formulations and techniques.

Take-Home Message

PRP, GFC and mesotherapy are three different injectable hair treatments.

PRP uses a platelet-rich preparation from your own blood.

GFC uses a growth-factor-focused preparation derived from your own blood.

Mesotherapy delivers selected therapeutic substances through multiple intradermal injections.

All may have a role in selected patients, but the right treatment begins with the right diagnosis.
